      Environment Club

Malezi School has over the years inculcated in the students, knowledge about their environment and the significance of conserving nature and maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Thus our students have won various accolades for their efforts over the years and have also represented the youth in Kenya and the African continent at various international conferences on the environment.

  • Amani Nkinda of STD 7, did us proud in 2007 by winning the top prize in the Giraffe Centre – Langata, and the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (K) Ltd sponsored national environmental competition held in May to June of 2007. The student won an all expenses paid trip to visit some of the best national parks and game reserves in the country.

  • Terry Odera won a UNEP sponsorship award to attend the TUNZA International children’s Conference in Patrujaya, Malaysia from the 26th – 30th of April 2006. Terry who was the only Kenyan student to win the award that year, was given the prize in recognition of  her involvement in various conservation activities since her early days at Malezi Primary School including the Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary.

Our students have been selected on account of their environmental work to attend Annual International Children’s Conference on Environment at different venues around the world. Some notable occasions are listed below:

    • International Children’s Conference – Canada – 19th – 26th May 2002: Was attended by: Helen Lang’at, Stephanie Wanjiku, Josiah Kimani, Kevin Kisoso, Melanie Kagure, and Joab Odera.
    • Millennium International Children’s Conference held in Eastbourne – South England in May of 2000 was attended by Abiy Ayalew, Krystal Midega and Mossi Oloo of the Malezi School Environment Club. The participants presented their club’s work and also helped run two workshops for children based on Pachamama, a special book written by children from all over the world.
  • The Club also participates in the World Environment Day schools competition every year that involves painting, writing essays poetry and photography. Our students have always scooped either 1st 2nd or 3rd position at these national competitions every year.

Malezi School environment Club hosted a unique mosaic modeling workshop from the 4th to the 15th of August 2003, that saw the school communities adjacent to the sanctuary develop special displays for a children’s nature trail. Mrs. Sue Holmes from the U.K. and Dr. Kahare Miano from the University of Nairobi facilitated the workshop. The programme was the first of its kind in Africa and students from Malezi school participated in the modeling of illustrations of the various bird species found at the sanctuary, which were later placed along the nature trail for educational programmes and viewing.  Malezi School Environment Club also assisted in the development of the nature trail manual. The nature trail was named after Winnie Duku who was one of the members of Malezi School Environment Club that played a major part in the development of the nature trail manual. A remembrance Holy Mass for the late Winnie Duku was held at the school on Friday 5th September 2003 and was organized together with and attended by members of her family. They have since moved to settle in Australia.
